href=”http://www.motorola.com/” rel=”homepage” target=”_blank” title=”Motorola Mobility”>Motorola MobilityInc. says some of its refurbished tablets have been sold through href=”http://www.woot.com/” rel=”homepage” target=”_blank” title=”Woot”>Woot.com’s refurbish and sell program with previous owners’ data still intact on the devices. href=”http://www.motorola.com/” rel=”homepage” target=”_blank” title=”Motorola”>Motorola Mobility said 100 of about 6,200 it sold through Woot.com from October to December still may have contained email and social media account passwords as well as other personal ephemera.
It’s asking users to return the affected devices and, for the customers whose data might have been farmed out, Motorola is offering a 2-year subscription to credit rating agency Experian’s ProtectMyID identity theft service.
Though the company is trying to make good, it can’t be blamed entirely—we shudder at the thought of sending a device into the depths of customer service returns without wiping it via the easily accessible “factory reset” option in Android settings.
