Nokia 6 receives June 2019 security update

Nokia 6 was HMD Global’s first Nokia-branded smartphone. The phone is now over two years old and interestingly it is still receiving monthly security updates even it is not under Android One programme. The phone is currently receiving June 2019 security update which is still not available on many of the newer phones.

The June 2019 security update for Nokia 6 weighs at 327.5 MB. The changelog for the update only mentions ‘Google Security Patch 2019-06’ and nothing else. Since the update is larger in size for a security patch, it could feature some under the hood changes as well. Nevertheless, we recommend you to download the update using WiFi to avoid any data charges unless you are in India where mobile data is cheap.

The Nokia 6 by HMD Global was launched with Android Nougat on board. Though it is not an Android One phone, the company promised two years of OS updates. And keeping up with the promise, the company updated the phone to Android Oreo followed by Android Pie earlier this year. Nokia 6 has been also receiving regular monthly security updates since its launch.

HMD Global only promised two years of OS updates to the first generation Nokia devices. As far as we can remember, they did not mention anything about the security updates thereafter. If these devices are intended to get 3 years of security updates, then the Nokia 6 will still receive updates for a few more months which is insane.
