Nokia future phones are powered by Xiaomi’s Surge S1 SoC

Xiaomi earlier this year has announced the Surge 1 SoC (System On Chip) which is designed and developed by Xiaomi themselves. Xiaomi Mi 5C is the only smartphone which is using Surge S1 as of now. Initially it was expected that only Xiaomi phones will be powered with Surge SoC’s. But later in the press release it is revealed than Nokia is their first customer who uses the same SoC. This indeed tells us that Nokia is going to manufacture more mid-range smartphones in future. Which will be powered by Xiaomi’s Surge S1.

Having the line up scheduled with HMD global by the end of 2017 or early 2018, Nokia will be back with their own manufacturing team. The Surge S1 chip is based on 28 nm process. It features 14 bit ISP (Image Signal Processor) which supports dim light photography.

Octa core include four cores of ARM Cortex A53 clocked at 2.2 GHz and four ARM cortex A53 clocked at 1.4 GHz. Thus, strengthening the octa core. This 64-bit CPU supports LTE connectivity along with extended graphics support via Mali T860 GPU.

With MediaTek and Qualcomm being the leaders in SoC manufacturing, we need to see how Xiaomi will market itself and connect with smartphone manufacturers. Stay tuned for further updates on Surge S1 SoC and Nokia’s upcoming smartphones.
