Universal Flash Storage, commonly known as UFS has been now updated to version 3.0 with twice the speed of previous generation, i.e. v2.1. Moreover, it also consumes less power to boot.
Features of UFS 3.0
JEDEC is the organization behind UFS and they updated the standard to new version after almost two years. However, the wait is worth as the latest iteration brings twice the speed along with less power consumption to boot. Though it uses two lanes like its predecessor to carry data, the speed has been now improved from latter’s 11.6 GBps to 23.2 GBps. Also, it operates on lower 2.5V rather than 2.7V to 3.6V like the previous generation.
Moving on, the operating temperature range is also now updated with -40°C to 105°C for automotive markets. Also, a new logging mode has been added for the device to enable in-system debugging along with refresh operation to improve device data reliability.
Expect the support for UFS 3.0 from next generation processors from Qualcomm and Samsung. Until then, smartphones will come with UFS 2.1 (mostly flagships). JEDEC also announced UFS card extension version 1.1 along with the updated UFS. But, it will still take time hit mainstream as it has several issues.
