Everybody knows the story with Android OS updates these days. Company launches a new device, it sells like hot cakes. Later, OEMs forget it, then, no updates or nothing is given to the device. The exception being only the flagship devices.
But with the squeezable HTC U11, you will get at least 2 years of guaranteed Android OS updates. And that is not surprising either, as Google backs OEMs to at least provide 2 years of updates. So, the HTC U11 buyers will be delighted to know that it will most probably get Android O soon after it releases later this year. And even Android P which will be the next version of Android O in 2018.
Chailin Chang, president of smartphones and connected devices at HTC, said “updates to the next two versions of Android”. Now there is nothing out of the blue here.
But wouldn’t it be great if the HTC U 11 had three years of updates. Well, HTC is ready for the prospect if Google allows them to do so. The HTC President said, this “will depend on the hardware and software demands of the version […] and if it will bring value to the consumer.” This means there is a good chance for the HTC U 11 to receive Android Q in 2019 if the update will be compatible with the hardware.
Now we would like to point out that HTC has promised a lot of things to its users including fast OS updates in the past. With the HTC A9 the company promised updates to Android Nougat within 15 days of release. A very tall claim indeed. Later, HTC went onto its promisee but not in the promised timeframe. Now there might have been many factors at play here, but we only need to say that expectations should be kept realistic when it comes to OEMs and OS updates.
