A jury in California has unanimously found Google guilty of copyright infringement in a Oracle’s Java Split Trial Case. But the US jury was unable to agree on whether Google’s actions constituted “fair use” under copyright law.
Now, a judge must rule on the fair use issue, which will determine whether Oracle can collect the millions of dollars in damages it has requested. The same jury will now hear evidence in the next phase of the trial, covering Oracle’s allegations that Android violates two Java patents. Still, there was no decision on whether the infringement fell under the rules of fair use or not.
