Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL codenames revealed in AOSP

Google’s forthcoming flagship duos, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are expected to arrive sometime in September or October this year. The devices are currently in development and rumors have started to build up about the next-generation Pixel series. Just last month, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL 360 degree renders were leaked online. In addition, leaked case renders suggest that Pixel 3 XL will bear a notch design and single rear camera. Most recently, Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP) commits mention ‘crosshatch’ and ‘blueline’ as the codenames for Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL handsets.

Crosshatch, the rumored codename for either Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL first showed up in the AOSP listing back in October, 2017. On the other hand, Blueline made an initial appearance alongside Crosshatch a while back. Another device with codename as ‘albacore’ also surfaced online. However, it is still unclear whether this device would actually be a smartphone or something else.

Quite surprisingly, the AOSP commit lists blueline and crosshatch along with walleye (Pixel 2) and taimen (Pixel 2 XL) accompanied by sailfish (Pixel) and marlin (Pixel XL).

The upcoming Pixel devices are expected to have thin bezels when compared to previous Pixel series. Moreover, Google Pixel 3 XL will bear a display notch unlike Pixel 3 which could have considerable amount of bezels. If rumors are to be believed, both Pixel handsets flaunt a single rear camera and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, which are obviously inherited from previous Pixel series.

While there is considerable amount of time remaining for the upcoming release, we should expect more of the rumors and leaks till the devices officially release.
