Pixel users on Oreo getting September security update erroneously tagged as Android 7.1.2

Just last month, Android 8.0 Oreo was made public for the Android users. As always, Google Pixel and Nexus devices have an advantage to receive the latest updates at the first place. Some Pixel users running the latest Android 8.0 Oreo on their Pixel devices have reported that they have received a new update with September security patch. However, it seems that there is some issue with the update tagged as Android 7.1.2, for users already running Android 8.0 Oreo on their Pixel handsets.

While some users reported that it’s a downgrade OTA on social platforms like Google+, others reached out to Google support to clarify the situation. Looking at the update notification, it certainly seems that it’s a downgrade for Android 8.0 users, but actually it is not the case.

As you may know, Oreo update triggered some issues that include Wi-Fi and bluetooth connection not working properly. However, these are just minor issues which can be fixed in the upcoming updates and would not require users to downgrade from Oreo to Nougat operating system.

It has also been reported that once you install the update and restart your device, the Android security on your device gets upgraded with September security patch without downgrading to Android Nougat and you’ll stick around Android Oreo.

In a nutshell, this latest update from Google comes with the latest security patch and it’s just erroneously tagged as Android Nougat 7.1.2. Therefore, if you were holding on the update thinking of some issues, now you can proceed with the update as it’s safe and secure to install.
